Events Calendar problem!!

There is currently a problem with the Event Calendar where the monthly view is not displaying events correctly. This is caused by a software error and requires a software update which is awaited. In the meanwhile the rolling panel on the right hand side of the Home page is the only view of up and coming events.

A reminder that next Saturday, 7th October, is the next monthly melee, registration at 09.45 for a 10.00 start.

Club Summer Doubles League – Launched

The Summer Doubles has been launched from today. A couple of Winter Doubles teams have dropped out with one new team entering. As there may be new players, (possibly some existing players) who would be interested in joining, Cary left 3 open spots in league B. If any of you are aware of a team that would like to enter could you please have them contact Cary.

http://cobpc.leaguerepublic.com/l/fg/1_489993786.html

We will be using the same format as we did for the Winter Doubles which proved to be very successful.
• Although dates are shown on the website, these can be ignored and you are free to set your own dates in agreement with your opposition
• Games may be played at any location.
• There is one game per match played to 13. Winners receive 3 points, losers 1 point. Points scored during the games will also be counted giving a point differential which could be important at the end of the season.
• The games must be finished by October 31st when we will start a new Winter Doubles
• Winners and Runners up will receive medals and there will be a cup for winners of each league.
• Promotion and Relegation will now kick in and it will be a 2 team up and down.

To decide the cup for the Winter Doubles could I ask Montys and Ship Mates to play a decider match (best of three) and if possible by the end of August so that you can be presented with your medals and cup at the Thursday League Dinner.

Good luck and have a good season.

Cary

The Jersey Open 2017 – a review by Di Greenaway

CONGRATULATIONS are in order to all of our members who entered the Jersey Open this year.

New friends were made and old friendships renewed as our teams were welcomed so warmly.
Weather was very kind on Saturday with great results from all of our teams.
Sunday could only be described as wet and cold but the teams put on waterproofs and battled through.

The two days consisted of 6 matches on Saturday after which teams (68 in all) were allocated into 4 divisions being, Main, Plate, Consolage 1 and Consolage 2.
Sunday morning was a Round Robin followed by semi-finals and finals in the afternoon.
The pistes, numbering over 40 , were challenging with 4 different surfaces so adjustments had to made throughout the day.

This is undoubtedly City of Bath’s best set of results yet with all of our teams in the top half of this very competitive Open.
On the first day 1 team had 5 wins and 1 loss and the other teams all had 3 wins and 3 losses.
This resulted in 1 team in the Main Competition and the others in The Plate.

Play continued on Monday at another club called Carrefour in Jersey.
This was much shorter and the games were timed in order that visiting teams could return home later that day.
Unfortunately the weather was so appalling that even the ferries were cancelled!
Our teams battled through the wind and rain with various degrees of success.

WELL DONE TO ALL.

Please see the Club’s Facebook page for pictures of the weekend.

Attention all Queen Square Boulers – no play on the 10th May.

A reminder that tomorrow’s session, ie 10th May, is cancelled as the surfaces are being re-dressed with the 5 tons of grit (6mm free limestone). This work is scheduled to commence mid morning so the square will be unavailable for play this week.
The Bath Grand Cru Petanque Club (Chris Garratt) has made arrangements for this with the supplier and is to supply the labour for distributing the grit onto the playing squares. Any other help would very welcome of course.
The intention is to create an improved playing surface, and to enhance the visual aspect of the square.
The process will be for a first layer of grit to be laid and pressured down, followed by a top surface.

No Club Session on Saturday 18th February

Larkhall FC have a home fixture against Hereford this Saturday. This is by far the biggest fixture of the year for the Club and will be an all ticket match. Hereford will bring a significant number of supporters who are expected to start arriving from midday.

As part of their crowd management plan Larkhall will be fencing off access to our terrains to keep supporters away from our playing areas. The club house will also be mainly standing room only to accommodate the numbers expected. As a consequence the EC have decided to cancel this Saturday’s club session.

The next club session will be Tuesday 21st February.

Changes to the Official Petanque Rules – an update from Robin Ralph

Robin in his capacity as GWR Regional Umpire has provided the following information for players in the GWR:

I am sure that by now many of you will have already seen the change of Official Petanque Rules which come into effect on the first of January 2017. The Rules are obtainable by hyperlink on the EPA website where the changes are highlighted in blue, and will be on the GWR website.
I suggest that you all acquaint yourselves with the new rules which should not present any problems, because some we already use in timed games, all the rules have been tested by the French Federation and some World and European Championships and for the change in Article 6, 7. We have used it at City of Bath Petanque Club in an Open Competition without any problem.

Some of the new changes are listed here, but the new rules should be read by all players before we start the new season.

1. Jack besides measuring 30+/- mm it must also weigh between 10-18 grams,
2. Prefabricated circles In all cases the circle must be marked before the jack is thrown.
3. Start of game or end The team winning the toss or previous end will have only one attempt to throw the Jack; if the jack is not valid it is handed the opponent who will place it at any valid position on the designated terrain. The team placing the jack must do so immediately. The valid position can be measured, for instance if it is close to the 6 or 10 meter line but if not valid is NOT passed back to the team that first threw the jack.
4. Feet in circle must be entirely inside the circle and not encroach on its perimeter failure to concur will now incur the penalties of Article 35
5.  Picking up circle while there are boules to be played, the marked circle is replaced but only the opponents are allowed to play their boules.
6. Displacement of obstacles It is now forbidden to sweep in front of the boule to be shot, the offending player incurs the penalties outlined in Article 35.
7. Removed Boules If a player picks up his boules from the playing area while their partner(s) have boules remaining they will not be allowed to play them.
8. Exceeding time Limits A yellow card for exceeding the time limit will be imposed on All the players of the offending team. If one of these players has already been given a yellow card they will be penalised by disqualification of the boule played or to be played.
9. Correct Dress etc. Specifically it is forbidden to play without a top and for safety reasons, the players must wear fully enclosed shoes protecting the toes and heels; It is forbidden to smoke during play, including electronic cigarettes and it is also forbidden to use mobile phones during the game.
