Message from the Chair

“We have had a very difficult two years which has reduced our participation in numerous events, to our detriment. However, the future looks considerably more rosy for 2022, so we plan to run a full schedule of events, always allowing for any hiccups that might arise on the health front. I urge members to join in the activities of the club whenever possible.” A list of 2022 events is attached here.

Membership fees 2022

A gentle reminder has been sent to all members in the latest newsletter that your Great Western Adult (PE) and Annual Club subscription are now due and must be paid by 31 March this year. The total subscription is £43 which should be paid via Petanque England’s automated online system (called Loveadmin)

Please contact Cary Bush if you have any membership queries or require help in using the online system. thank you if you have already paid – in doing so you are making life easier for yourManagement Committee.

Club Times over Christmas and New Year

LSC/Queen Sq – 24th, 25th, and 31st December

Please be aware that there will be no CoBPC organised games on any of these dates. Of course members are still free to come along and play, but the club facilities (hut/club house) will not be open and no one will be providing tea or coffee.

Queen Sq – New Year’s Day Boules

As in previous years we will be meeting in Queen Square on New Year’s Day at 12.00 to play one game of boules.  Just turn up if you wish to play.  Afterwards we have booked the Francis Hotel for a meal at 1.15.  Please email Christine Cox on chrisw57@blueyonder.co.uk or ring her mobile 07980 855494 if you wish to book a place for the meal.  The Francis require a £10 deposit if you wish to pre-order your meal.

September Melee Results

The early autumn sun shone on Saturday for the 31 entrants of the September melee, and the Club was pleased to welcome a number of new members who were trying out a melee for the first time.

The four rounds were keenly contested with only two players achieving the maximum four wins, and a third with three wins and a draw.

Thursday League Presentation and Dinner – 19th September

This year’s  Thursday League Presentation Dinner will be held on Thursday 19th September, commencing at 19:00, at Larkhall Sports Club.

The presentation evening is open to all teams and players who have participated in this year’s Thursday League. The presentation and dinner marks the end of the league season and is a wonderful opportunity to meet up with new and old friends, and to congratulate this year’s Divisional winners and runners up.

The Divisional Trophy winners and runners up medals will be presented as well as the Division 3, 4 and 5 Cup and Plate trophies.

This year’s meal will be a buffet style at the very reasonable cost of £11 per head,  payable on the night.

The menu choices are:

  • Coronation chicken served on a bed of rice.
  • Salmon salad with a chilli and lemon dressing
  • A selection of local and continental meats.
  • Goats cheese and caramelised red onion tart.

All served with hot new potatoes, crusty bread, a selection of freshly made salads.

Dessert

  • A selection of English and Continental cheeses served with biscuits
  • Fresh fruit platter

Vintage Games at LSC

This year the third National Vintage Games were held in Bath and for the first time Boules featured as one of the sports. The National Vintage Games are open to players over 50 in age with a wide range of sports available e.g. rugby, swimming, football, netball etc. For further details on these sports and the event in general visit the website www.nationalvintagegames.com

The Boules tournament was held at Larkhall Sports Club, the home of the City of Bath Petanque Club, with 12 teams competing. The format comprised of 3 groups each of 4 teams playing each other in the morning. Followed by semi-finals straight after lunch made up from the 3 group winners (Codfathers, Banjacs, Veneraboules – all CoBPC) and the best runner up (The Scabs). The final was then contested by Codfathers and Banjacs with Codfathers coming out on top.

All the proceeds raised, £267, going to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Our thanks go to David Knight for organising the competition, Anne Knight for the selection of scrummy cakes, Larkhall Sports Club for use of their clubhouse, and to Liz Bug for capturing the action with some brilliant pictures. A selection of her pictures can be viewed here.

Family Fun Days

Two dates for your diaries:

Saturday 6th July – Larkhall Family Fun Day at LSC commencing at 1.00pm.

Saturday 13th July – Box Bastille Day Family Fun Festival commencing 4.00pm.

Both events feature a wide range of stalls and activities, plus live bands in the evening.

Spring Open 2019 Results

Congratulations to Double Phil – Phil Bradridge and Phil Weaver who are the 2019 Spring Open Champions.

This year’s Open was limited to 24 teams with teams seeded into three categories of Gold, Silver and Bronze after the morning’s play.

After a day of tough competition the winners and runners-up in each of the three categories were:

Gold

  • Winners – Double Phil  (Phil Bradridge and Phil Weaver)
  • Runners Up  – The Sanglier  (Gary Lee and Denis)

Silver

  • Winners – Jans Pot  (Jan Weaver and Robin Ralph)
  • Runners Up – L’Arc en Ciel  (Di Greenaway and Richard Savery)

Bronze

  • Winners – DNA   (Alex and Darlene Robertson)
  • Runners Up – Gorjon   (John Stanfield and Gordon Wilkinson)

Many thanks to all the teams who entered for making it such an enjoyable event, with special thanks to Cary for organising and administering the day’s play and to Mel and her team for the catering.

Spring Open

Don’t forget it’s the City of Bath Spring Open this Saturday (18th May). This is one of the Club’s two main open events and is a pairs competition. Places are still available so if you’d like to enter a team please contact Cary Bush cary@bathboules.co.uk. The entry fee is £30.00 per team and includes lunch.
